IRAN

Teheran still ready for talks with Washington

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that Iran is still ready for nuclear talks on condition that the United States first lifts "unlawful" sanctions. "If they are prepared to put aside the sanctions, we are ready to talk and negotiate, even at the level of heads of the 5+1 countries," Rouhani said in remarks aired live on state television. Rouhani has long demanded the lifting of US sanctions for Iran's return to talks under the auspices of the so-called P5+1-the five veto-wielding permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany that reached the 2015 nuclear deal. The deal gave Iran relief from economic sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear program. It has been at risk of falling apart since US President Donald Trump withdrew from it in May last year and reimposed sanctions on Iran.

JAPAN

Trade deal wins Parliament approval

Japan's Parliament on Wednesday approved a trade deal that was agreed upon by US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in September. The deal cutting tariffs between the countries will take effect at the beginning of next year. It cleared Japan's upper house on Wednesday after clearing the more powerful lower house earlier. Some critics say the deal is more advantageous to the United States since a 2.5 percent tariff on Japanese automobiles remains. The deal will pave the way for cheaper US beef and other agricultural products in Japan. When the trade deal was reached, Trump said it meant opening Japan's market to about $7 billion in US farm goods. Abe has called the deal a "win-win", prompting criticism from the opposition. Japanese farmers form a large support base for Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Google co-founders step down amid scrutiny

The co-founders of Google are stepping down as executives of its parent company just as scrutiny from regulators heats up. Larry Page and Sergey Brin will step aside as CEO and president of Alphabet to make room for Sundar Pichai, who has led Google as CEO for more than four years. Pichai has been serving as the de facto public and political face of the company for years. Pichai will continue leading shareholder meetings, earnings calls and Congressional testimonies-now with more authority. Google is facing increasing criticism and investigations from authorities in the United States and Europe about its privacy policies and the nature of its many-legged business.

AFGHANISTAN

Japanese doctor dies after attack

A Japanese physician and aid worker in eastern Afghanistan died of his wounds after an attack on Wednesday that also killed five Afghans, including the doctor's bodyguards, the driver and a passenger, a hospital spokesman said. The attack in Nangarhar Province targeted Japanese doctor Tetsu Nakamura as he was heading to the provincial capital, Jalalabad, according to the provincial governor's spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani. Nakamura was seriously wounded and had been reported to be in critical condition immediately after the attack. He underwent surgery at a hospital but died of his injuries while being airlifted to the Bagram Airfield Hospital in the capital, Kabul, for further treatment, said Gulzada Sanger, the hospital spokesman. Nakamura had headed the Japanese charity, Peace Medical Service, in Nangarhar since 2008. He went to Afghanistan after a Japanese colleague, Kazuya Ito, was abducted and killed.
