COVID-19 related trademarks rejected

The National Intellectual Property Administration had rejected 328 applications for novel coronavirus-related trademarks and allowed the withdrawal of 866 filings by March 16. The applications involved the names of COVID-19 victims and the hospitals built for the disease in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei province, as well as medicines and medical services. The administration said these applications would trigger public concerns and anger or mislead consumers. It issued a new rule in late February to tighten the censorship of such trademark applications.

Aid allows free services to small businesses

The government of Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, is offering financial aid to intellectual property service providers and encouraging them to provide small businesses with free patent services. The services include filings, licensing and transfer, patent-collateralized financing and protection of rights. The local government said the move will help small businesses improve their capabilities in IP creation, use, protection and management.

Office goes online to prevent crowds

The Anhui provincial intellectual property office has been encouraging patent applicants and agencies to handle business online or by post to avoid gatherings since the novel coronavirus outbreak. Official figures show that more than 8,000 patent-related jobs were completed online in February. The office has mapped out a detailed working guide on how to file a patent online, pay patent maintenance fees and register a patent as collateral, among other issues.

White paper stresses law enforcement

The Guangdong Administration for Market Regulation released the first white paper on the construction of its consumption environment on March 12. It highlights the law enforcement of intellectual property rights. The province in South China has strengthened IP protection, increased supervision over pricing, fought unfair competition, cracked down on infringements and improved joint social governance. The province applied the country's first policy to reward people who report the production and sales of counterfeit goods.

Event aims to expand finance to local firms

The Qinghai provincial intellectual property office-in cooperation with its Xining branch in the provincial capital-launched matchmaking activities among companies, banks and assessing agencies to help expand finance for local companies. The office has also launched policies on the reduction of patent application fees, priorities in patent examination, and awards and subsidies for patent holders.

Robust increase in filings in US last year

A report by IFI Claims Patent Services showed Chinese mainland companies registered 34 percent more US-granted patents in 2019, the strongest growth among major economies. As a whole, the United States ranked first. It holds a 49 percent share of US patents granted in 2019, followed by Japan and South Korea. China surpassed Germany for the first time to rank fourth, according to the report.
