Officials and observers on Thursday called for deepening cooperation in the pharmaceutical industries of member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, or SCO, in a bid to improve the healthcare and wellbeing of people amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the SCO Pharmaceutical Cooperation Development Conference, Farhod Arziev, Uzbekistan's ambassador to China, said in his speech via video link that cooperation in the pharmaceutical industries under the SCO framework has achieved a lot.

He spoke highly of the cooperation during a time when the world is still facing the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zhang Ming, secretary-general of the SCO, said at the meeting held in Beijing that during his visits to SCO member countries, he has seen the achievements from the cooperation, which include COVID-19 test kits and vaccines jointly made by China and other member countries.

Cooperation has flourished across the borders of the SCO countries and has benefited the people, said Zhang, adding that China has carried out projects, including free treatment for cataract patients and online seminars on pediatric cerebral palsy rehabilitation.

Arziev also called on SCO countries to strengthen cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry.

The localization of advanced Chinese pharmaceutical technologies in Uzbekistan is of great significance, and the two countries are promoting collaboration in research and development and production of medicines at a higher level, the ambassador said.

Cui Li, vice-president of the Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation Committee of the SCO, said people-to-people diplomacy has played an increasingly important role in healthcare cooperation among SCO countries.

China is willing to push forward cooperation in the fields of vaccine and drug production, and encourage Chinese enterprises to go abroad to meet the great demands of international procurement, Cui said.

The Initiative to Promote and Establish Pharmaceutical Industry Cooperation under the Framework of the SCO was also launched during the meeting.

"Hosts of the conference have reached consensus on promoting to build a platform for cooperation and exchange of drug regulation, facilitating integration of the pharmaceutical industry of SCO countries, and deepening global health cooperation," the statement said.

The meeting was co-hosted by the Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation Committee of the SCO, Secretariat of the SCO, the embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in China, and the China Pharmaceutical Innovation and Research Development Association.

The 2022 annual summit of the SCO Heads of State Council is scheduled for Sept 15-16 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
