HK legislation attacks show why it's vital
The "grave concern" the G7 foreign ministers expressed in the joint statement they issued on Wednesday over China's decision to introduce a national security law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is misplaced and hubristic.
To begin with, the proposed legislation that they are so strongly critical of, claiming it undermines the region's legal and political institutions and thus its high-degree of autonomy, targets four illegal behaviors-secession; subversion of state power; local terrorist activities; and collaborating with foreign or external foreign forces to endanger national security-that their countries also proscribe.
Also since the legislation is purely an internal affair of China's, constitutional and in line with the urgent needs of Hong Kong and those living there, there is no cause for censure-except from those who fear it will thwart their malevolent endeavors.
