Jamaica is set to enhance its engagement with the Chinese market through strategic initiatives in brand promotion, tourism collaboration and strengthening economic and trade ties, according to Arthur Williams, Jamaica's ambassador to China.

"When Jamaican merchants bring a container from China to Jamaica, we hope to see that container not return empty, but rather filled with Jamaican products," Williams told China Times.

Jamaica is a significant economic and trade partner for China in the Caribbean region. In terms of trade cooperation, the island nation imports a large volume of machinery and equipment from China, while reciprocal exports are relatively limited, mainly consisting of products such as alcohol, rum and coffee, Williams said.

Data indicates that in 2023, Jamaica's import value reached $1.27 billion, marking a 26.3 percent year-on-year increase. However, its export value stood at just $13.22 million, reflecting a 10.1 percent decline year-on-year. According to the ambassador, Jamaica is striving to address that imbalance by boosting its exports to China.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972, cooperation between China and Jamaica has continued to deepen.

Data from the General Administration of Customs of China show, bilateral trade volume between China and Jamaica reached $1.28 billion in 2023, representing a 25.8 percent year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, the two sides are engaged in comprehensive and in-depth dialogue and cooperation across multiple fields including economy, trade, culture and tourism, further strengthening the bilateral relationship.

According to Williams, in recent years, Chinese consumer demand for high-quality and fresh seafood products has increased, and Jamaica has responded by exporting frozen and fresh lobsters. This is expected to open up extensive growth opportunities in the Chinese market and provides strong support for Jamaica in reducing its trade deficit.

Boasting stunning natural landscapes and a rich cultural heritage, Jamaica has established its tourism industry as a vital pillar of the national economy. Globally renowned as a tourist destination, the island is home to world-class beaches, vibrant cultural activities and diverse eco-tourism offerings. "Exploring this country, especially its countryside, you'll discover a beautiful nation with friendly and welcoming people," said Williams. In 2014, Jamaica implemented a visa-free policy for Chinese tourists, and in recent years the number of Chinese visitors has steadily increased.

According to reports, Jamaica has pinpointed eight key industries for development: agriculture; energy; global digital services; logistics and infrastructure; manufacturing; mining; tourism; and creative services such as film, animation and music.

Williams said China's strengths in infrastructure development align closely with Jamaica's needs for infrastructure improvement, adding: "China has consistently been a solid partner for Jamaica. In fact, for Caribbean countries with diplomatic ties with China, significant investments have been made (by Chinese enterprises), especially in port development, as well as highway and road construction. These infrastructure projects have driven economic development in these Caribbean nations and greatly improved the economic living standards of local people."

Jamaica is open to Chinese investors, Williams said, noting the country has no restrictions on foreign investments and has introduced incentives such as tax reductions. Additionally, there are no limitations on currency movement, creating a favorable policy environment for Chinese businesses to invest.

The ambassador said businesses investing in Jamaica's free zones can benefit from lower tax rates and government-provided startup support.

"Through these and other incentives, Jamaica hopes to attract more Chinese businesses to invest in various sectors, thereby promoting local infrastructure development and overall economic growth," he added.
