BMW's Neue Klasse iX3 shows how innovation evolves in the electric era
For more than a century, BMW's technological reputation has been built around engineering achievements that drivers could feel behind the wheel: powerful engines, balanced chassis and precise handling.
But as the automotive industry enters the era of electrification and intelligent mobility, the definition of automotive innovation is changing.
The competition is moving beyond batteries and electric powertrains toward digital interaction, artificial intelligence and the ability to transform advanced technologies into reliable customer experiences.
The Neue Klasse iX3 Long Wheelbase, which is scheduled to start presales at the Chengdu auto show later in August, offers a glimpse of how BMW is responding to this transformation.
While retaining its engineering heritage, BMW has made forays into a new technological battlefield. The company is using intelligent cabins, digital interfaces and integrated vehicle systems to redefine what premium mobility means in the electric era.
Two innovations on the new model — BMW Panoramic Vision and the Front Phygital Lighting — demonstrate this approach.
When a windshield becomes an interface
One of the most visible changes in the new BMW iX3 is the cabin, where the traditional relationship between driver and vehicle is being redefined. The windshield is no longer simply a safety component that provides visibility.
Through BMW Panoramic Vision, it becomes an intelligent display interface, allowing key driving information to appear within the driver's natural field of vision.
For BMW, the goal is not to add more screens, but to make information interaction more natural and reduce unnecessary visual distraction. Creating this experience required a fundamental transformation of windshield technology.
The project originated in 2014, when Fuyao Group brought a prototype of its parallel-polarized light solution to BMW in Germany. The original idea was to solve a common challenge faced by head-up displays: poor visibility when drivers wear polarized sunglasses. But during discussions between the two companies, the concept evolved.
Engineers realized that the black area at the bottom of the windshield could become a new display area, opening the door to a completely new human-machine interaction experience.
That process lasted for years. Initially, the teams focused on parallel-polarized light reflectivity.
Later, they discovered that different wavelengths of red, green and blue light could create color deviation, leading to new requirements for color accuracy.
Discussions also resulted in stricter standards for the appearance and consistency of the display area.
The final result required extraordinary engineering precision. The windshield achieved a parallel-polarized light reflectivity of 20 percent in vehicle conditions, allowing drivers to see information even under strong sunlight or while wearing polarized glasses.
To guarantee consistent performance, BMW and Fuyao insisted that every part of the black display area must function, allowing no tolerance for even a 1-millimeter deviation. The teams eventually controlled spectral deviation within plus or minus 2 percent.
"The product was not created by one side alone. It was the result of continuous discussion and joint definition between BMW and Fuyao," said Jiang Bingming, vice-president of Fuyao Group.
From headlights to intelligent sensing systems
If the windshield represents the transformation of the interior experience, the Front Phygital Lighting system demonstrates how BMW is rethinking vehicles' exterior.
Developed together with FORVIA HELLA, the intelligent front panel integrates lighting, design elements and sensing technologies into a single system.
The front of a vehicle is no longer only about appearance and illumination. It is becoming a digital interface capable of sensing the environment and supporting intelligent driving functions.
However, integrating radar sensors into a lighting system presented new challenges.
"The traditional capability of a lighting company focused on optical design, mechanical structures and thermal management," said Qin Kai, managing director of HELLA Nanjing Technical Center.
"This project required us to develop new system integration capabilities because radar and lighting had to work together as one system," he said.
One example was the development of a special lamp cover that allows radar signals to pass through while maintaining the vehicle's design aesthetics.
Inside the thin film structure of the lamp cover is a heating wire only 170 micrometers in diameter and 8 meters in length. The system can remove ice and snow in extremely cold conditions, ensuring stable radar performance.
But developing the technology was only the first challenge. Making it suitable for mass production was more difficult.
At FORVIA HELLA's Changchun plant, the company built one of the industry's most advanced production lines. It includes a high-precision cleanroom matching the sterility of a hospital operating theater, set up to solve the challenges of film injection molding.
"Without this investment, the project could not have met BMW's quality requirements," said Cheng Peitao, general manager of the FORVIA HELLA Changchun plant.
The development process required both companies to establish new standards from scratch, including radar transmission performance, material precision and functional safety requirements.
Trust, not just transactions
The stories behind the windshield and Front Phygital Lighting reveal a broader question: why can BMW continue to come up with new groundbreaking technologies in such a rapidly changing industry?
One answer lies in its relationship with suppliers. Both Fuyao and FORVIA HELLA used the same words when describing their cooperation with BMW: trust, partnership and respect.
"BMW does not treat suppliers simply as suppliers. It treats them as partners," said Jiang. "It is a fair and reasonable company. It stays with us hand in hand throughout the whole process."
During the development process, BMW engineers worked closely with supplier teams, not only evaluating final results but participating in solving problems.
At times, BMW and the suppliers challenged each other. "Sometimes we thought the results were already good enough. But BMW would say, 'Well, let's see if we can make it even better'," said Cheng at FORVIA HELLA.
Such disagreements were usually resolved through engineering logic rather than commercial hierarchy. "There is no question of who convinces whom or who compromises more," Cheng said. "The principle is that the best solution should win."
This partnership model has been built over decades. Since beginning cooperation with BMW, both Fuyao and FORVIA HELLA have experienced the evolution from traditional component supply to joint innovation.
For suppliers, BMW's strict standards can be demanding. But they also create opportunities to push technology further.
"BMW's requirements are strict because the ultimate goal is to create the best product for customers," Cheng said. "We know BMW is there with us, so we are assured even when there are technological difficulties."
The China-exclusive BMW iX3 also reflects the changing role of China's automotive supply chain.
"It means a deeper model of ecosystem co-creation: seamlessly uniting China's innovation with BMW's engineering excellence," said Jin Xin, senior vice-president of the purchasing and supplier network China at BMW Group.
Today, BMW works with more than 480 first-tier suppliers in China, and such partners are increasingly involved in early-stage research, engineering validation and product development.
The collaboration with Fuyao and FORVIA HELLA shows that innovation in the electric era is no longer defined by a single technology or a single company.
It requires the ability to combine global engineering experience with local innovation capabilities.
For BMW, the Neue Klasse is more than a new generation of electric vehicles. It represents how a company with more than a century of engineering heritage is adapting its innovation leadership for a new era of intelligent mobility.
The technologies may have changed, but BMW's pursuit of engineering excellence remains the same.
